birch cabins ⌉⌈ scope: conceptual design proposal ⌉⌈ status: Unbuilt⌉⌈ location: door county WI/USA
Located in one of the charming sites in Door County, Wisconsin, the birch cabins project depicts a vision of constructing affordable camping units for hikers as well as nature lovers who would like to experience the idea of hiking, yet living in an architecture that can be part of the hiking experience. The circulation pattern used to connect the cabins came to emphasize the sense of place as well as community to overcome isolation and full remoteness, yet providing a high level of privacy. The pattern of organizing the units carefully responds to the views, the natural daylight, and above all to engaging the hikers in a community-oriented setting. This was facilitated by elevating the units off the ground level to create an inside-outside space that allows doubling a pedestrian route underneath those units. each unit is supported by eight steel columns hiding within the vertically slatted envelop that mimics the organic look of birch trees.
